How do you Switch off and Relax during a Massage Treatment

Getting a Hot Stone Massage Treatment is a great way to distance yourself from the daily demands, to allow your mind to switch off, de-focus, and unwind while the body gets pampered. But if you are an over or active thinker it can be difficult to tune out. It is interesting that when you have nothing to do but relax a jumble of thoughts pop into the consciousness and compete for attention.

You find yourself deciding on what to make for dinner and then quickly having to think of something else before your stomach starts rumbling.  Or wondering if you just nodded off for a second back then. Are the kids OK? Did I send that out of office email? Is it OK to sleep next to your phone?
And so the time is spent fretting about things you have no control over and can’t do anything about until the massage treatment is finished. The result of running from thought to thought is that you don’t get the entire benefit of having a massage.

How to tune the world out and focus on relaxing?

Just like meditation, it begins with the breath. Breathe slowly and deeply and focus on each breath. If the mind wonders bring you attention back to the breathing.

Let your body fill your present. Focus on what is happening in that moment. Be aware of the sensations of the muscles being massaged. Slowly run you focus from the top of your head to the tip of your toes and back up again.

Step back from the emotional roller-coaster. As thoughts come to mind don’t chase them down the rabbit hole. Ask yourself why you are thinking about this and look for the reason or emotional trigger behind the thought.

Search your core. Find out what makes you, you, what your passions are and what makes you happy. Explore and expand on the feelings of joy, happiness and the sense of compassion.

Becoming fully relaxed takes some practice but the benefits of being able to completely relax are worth the effort. At Ginkgo Spas in Cape Town and Arniston, we aid your journey to total relaxation with soft sounds, expert massage treatments in a calm and serene environment.
