Winter is officially here in South Africa! With the days growing shorter and the nights darker, we all are reaching for our thermal underwear, making fires and cranking up the heaters (as well as indulging in a little bit of comfort-Winter-warming food!). However, with electric heaters, lack of moisture in the air and drastic changes in temperatures, our skin can take a beating in Wintertime!

Here are a few tips to keep your skin in tip-top shape this Winter!

Moisturise More

You might have a moisturiser that works well for you, but as weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine.  Find an “ointment” moisturiser that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion. (Hint: Many lotions labelled as “night creams” are oil-based.)

But be careful choosing your oils because not all are appropriate for the face. Make sure you choose “non-clogging” oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil. Shea oil – or butter – is controversial, because it can clog facial pores, as well as vegetable shortening.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, ask one of our Ginkgo Spa Therapists to help you!

Slather on the Sunscreen

You heard right, Winter sun can still damage your skin. So make sure you keep to your routine of applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands (if they’re exposed) about 30 minutes before going outside.

Avoid super-hot baths & showers

We know there is nothing better than a long hot soak or shower on a cold rainy day, but these long, hot intense periods can cause the skin to dry out even further. Keep your water below boiling and make sure you apply a good moisturiser as soon as you get out!

Don’t forget the hands!

The skin on your hands is thinner than on most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moisturised, especially in cold, dry weather. Make sure you keep them well hydrated with a good product and wear gloves when outside, otherwise this can lead to itchiness and cracking.

Make sure you drink enough water!

People tend to drink less water during winter but it is highly important to hydrate your skin from within. Carry a bottle of water with you whenever you step outside. Herbal tea is also a great remedy to help get in some extra water!
